A sneak peek at Royal Caribbean’s newest mega-ship
By Laura Wahler
Since the inaugural sailing of Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas (pictured above), online message boards have been aflutter with news and questions about the cruise line’s newest Oasis-class mega ship, Allure of the Seas. “Everything Allure” and “New Allure pictures!” are just two of the topics that have generated thousands of replies from cruising enthusiasts around the world.

Barbara and I were once again up and off the ship early; ready to make the most of our day in Alaska’s southernmost City. It was a cool and misty morning. We had a few minutes to enjoy a steaming cup of coffee and poke around a gift shop at the base of the gangway before boarding a motorcoach to the Saxman Native Village.

It has been a year since two friends and I pointed our car west and set out on a cross-country adventure into the heart of America. We were mostly in it for the memories and didn’t have much of a plan, but we had all picked one American icon to visit while on the road. Yellowstone was mine.

For eight years I called Boston home. I spent countless hours walking the tree-lined streets of the Back Bay near my first apartment and remember well sitting in Copley Square for hours watching people mingle under the soaring elegance of the landmark John Hancock Tower. It is the city where I began my career, and it is the city where I met and married my wife of almost 20 years.
After 10 years publishing Going Places, AAA Western and Central New York will launch a new membership magazine called Member Connection in February 2011. The November/December issue will be your last issue of Going Places, but we know that you will be as excited as we are about your new AAA membership magazine.

The day begins early in East Africa. At the first light of dawn in Kenya’s Massai Mara National Reserve, safari trucks speed off into the sunrise in hopes of a close encounter with one of Africa’s glamorous cats. The early morning is the best time to catch a glimpse of the beautiful and elusive animals before they seek shelter from the midday heat.

With my wife and I both working, and our two daughters in college, it is no easy task to find a good time for a family vacation. And we know that as the girls begin to go their own ways, it will become increasingly difficult to keep this tradition alive. So we finally settled on the week before Christmas, since this was the only time that our kids’ college breaks overlapped.

Four black bears cavort just 30 feet from me in Neets Bay, a remote region of Alaska that I've accessed via floatplane from Ketchikan. My instructions are clear: no running, sudden movement or flash photography. Most important? “No petting the bears,” says my guide. “You’d be surprised how many people try.”
